How to appear in Perplexity: how it picks sources and how to get cited
How Perplexity picks its sources, the difference between PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and what to do so your website appears in its answers.
In short: Perplexity searches the web in real time for every question and adds numbered citations to its sources. For your website to be among them, it must be accessible to PerplexityBot, visible in regular search and answer customer questions directly. You cannot buy a place in the answer.
How Perplexity builds its answers
Perplexity is an answer engine. Instead of a list of links, it gives a ready answer with numbered citations that lead to the pages it used. According to Perplexity’s help center, it works in three steps: the system interprets the question, searches current sources on the web, and then combines the key facts into a single answer.
In Pro Search and Deep Research modes, Perplexity runs many searches at once and reads dozens or even hundreds of pages. This matters for businesses: a page that clearly explains one specific aspect of a question can become a source, even if it is not the most popular site in the industry.
Perplexity’s crawlers: PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User
Perplexity uses two crawlers with different jobs:
- PerplexityBot builds the search index from which Perplexity selects and links pages in its answers. According to the documentation, it is not used to train AI models. Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt.
- Perplexity-User fetches a page at the moment a user asks a question, so it can be cited. Because it acts on a user’s request, it generally does not follow robots.txt rules.
If your website blocks PerplexityBot — in robots.txt or through a server firewall (WAF, Cloudflare) — Perplexity has fewer reasons and fewer ways to recommend it. Changes to robots.txt can take around 24 hours to take effect. The quickest way to check is our free AI readiness test. How to increase your chances of being cited by Perplexity
1. Answer customer questions directly
Perplexity picks passages that clearly answer the question. Start a page or section with a one-sentence answer, then add the details. Use question-style headings such as “How much does… cost?” or “How long does… take?”.
2. Give specifics, data and sources
Prices, ranges, timelines, numbers and comparisons are easier to cite than general claims. When you refer to data, link to its source. A page that reads like a reliable reference has a better chance than a purely promotional one.
3. Keep content up to date
Perplexity looks for information in real time, so outdated content loses to current content. Show the date of the last update and refresh your key pages when prices, services or regulations change.
4. Build your brand’s presence beyond your own website
Perplexity’s answers often draw on news sites, industry portals, rankings, forums and business directories. Mentions of your company in such places increase the chance that your brand appears in the answer, even when another page is cited instead of yours.
5. Don’t neglect classic SEO
Perplexity relies on its own search index, and fast, well-indexed, clearly described pages have an advantage here too. A sitemap, good titles and descriptions, and structured data help across all search engines at once. We explain how the two disciplines relate in AEO vs SEO.
How to check whether Perplexity recommends your company
- List 10–20 questions your customers ask, e.g. “which solar installer in Kraków” or “how much does an SEO audit cost”.
- Ask them in Perplexity (ideally in a private window) and note whether your brand appears in the answer and whether your website is among the citations.
- Write down which pages Perplexity cites instead of yours. They show where a mention is worth earning or what content to create.
- Repeat the check every month, because answers change.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay for a place in a Perplexity answer?
You cannot buy a place among the sources of an answer. What matters is whether crawlers can access your site, the quality and freshness of your content, and your brand’s presence in other trusted sources.
Does blocking GPTBot also block Perplexity?
No. Every AI company has its own crawlers. For Perplexity, PerplexityBot is what matters most, so robots.txt rules need to be set separately for each crawler.
How long until Perplexity starts citing my website?
There is no fixed timeline. A page accessible to PerplexityBot can be cited within days, but consistent presence in answers usually takes several months of work on content and brand mentions.
Does Perplexity work in languages other than English?
Yes. Perplexity answers in the language of the question, including Polish, and cites pages in that language. That is why it is worth publishing content in the languages your customers search in.
